A Taste of the Ancient World an exhibit about Greco-Roman eating and drinking, farming and starving presented by undergraduates in Classical Civilization 452: Food in the Ancient World The Kelsey Museum of Archaeology October 24th, 1996 - July 21st, 1997 In our own society, there is no escaping the significance of food. Food and drink keep us alive. They feed our imagination and stimulate our senses. They communicate beliefs. They distinguish rich from poor. They are a blessing that can sometimes become a curse. Each of these statements would have been equally true in the ancient Mediterranean world. This exhibit has been designed by undergraduate students to provide just a 'taste' of the complexities of Greco-Roman food production and consumption. Ancient Calendars Early Clocks A Revolution in Timekeeping The "Atomic" Age World Time Scales and Time Zones NIST Time Services Bibliography Ancient Calendars C elestial bodies — the Sun, Moon, planets, and stars — have provided us a reference for measuring the passage of time throughout our existence. Ancient civilizations relied upon the apparent motion of these bodies through the sky to determine seasons, months, and years. We know little about the details of timekeeping in prehistoric eras, but wherever we turn up records and artifacts, we usually discover that in every culture, some people were preoccupied with measuring and recording the passage of time. Archeology is the scientific study of past human culture and behavior, from the origins of humans to the present. Archaeology studies past human behavior through the examination of material remains of previous human societies. These remains include the fossils (preserved bones) of humans, food remains, the ruins of buildings, and human artifacts—items such as tools, pottery, and jewelry. From their studies, archaeologists attempt to reconstruct past ways of life. Archeologists are looking for ancient places. Sometimes, they found whole cities. Sometimes they found bowls or coins or small oil lamps that people used in their homes. When archeologists work, they work slowly and carefully so that they do not break anything fragile when they dig. It can take months to find one little pot.A Read More

Through DNA research, scientists are suggesting that even though Neanderthal and modern man lived at the a time, they did not intermingle. As a result of recent discoveries in Zaire, scientists are suggesting humans in Africa were inventing sophisticated tools before humans in Europe, as was previously believed. Anthropologists have discussed the development of humankind for many years. Information on early humans can only come from discovery of artifacts and fossils. The artifacts are analyzed and anthropologists make educated guesses as to what the items were used for. Experts may have Read More

Mycenaean Trade in the Mediterranean

Mycenaean Trade in the Mediterranean Introduction In 1982 C.E., a Turkish sponge-diver was diving near Uluburun, a rocky peninsula extending from Turkey's southern coastline. Courtesy of the Institute of Nautical Archaeology The diver discovered a trove of copper ingots . He reported his find to the authorities. Very soon, a team of archaeologists from the Institute of Nautical Archaeology in Texas traveled to Turkey. What the Turkish sponge-diver had found, 150 feet below the surface, was the earliest shipwreck known to man. The ship was a trading vessel of the fourteenth century B.C.E. with thousands of items aboard. For ten years archaeologists excavated and studied the find. Teams of divers worked on the shipwreck and many more worked on the surface cleaning, conserving and cataloging Read More

When we think about Egypt, camels, pyramids , and mummies often come to mind! That's not surprising since much of what we know about ancient Egypt comes from the tombs of Egyptians and the objects found buried with them. No one knows exactly what life was like in ancient Egypt, but these objects tell us a lot. Egyptian fashion, religious beliefs, recreational activities, and much more can be explored through the art they created and included in their burials. . The Romans built roads so that the army could march from one place to another. They tried to build the roads as straight as possible, so that the army could take the shortest route. Senior Exhibition of Mastery

Senior Exhibition of Mastery Hi. My name is Marisol Evans. As a project for my Honors English 12 class, we had to have an exhibition of mastery. Something that showed a "mastery" in an area that we researched. I decided on Ancient Egypt; I've always been fascinated by it. It took me quite awhile to decide what to do with it. I thought of, then rejected, having an art show, speaking to different schools, and even maybe putting on an exhibit of Egyptian paraphrenalia. However, I finally decided on this. What's this, you ask? Well, creating a web page devoted soley to Ancient Egypt. I created it for the 6th graders in my school district. They have a unit on Ancient Egypt, and what with this being the time of technology, I thought a lil' online help would be appropriate. Because it is directed Read More

What is VRoma? VRoma is first and foremost a community of scholars, both teachers and students, who help to create on-line resources for teaching Latin and ancient Roman culture and who use these resources in their courses. Many of these "VRomans" learned the skills they use to contribute to the project in the context of workshops held in the summers of 1997 and 1998. Using the VRoma MOO, e-mail, and our web discussion board, they continue to collaborate "virtually" even after the workshops have ended, in order to refine the skills required for successful on-line collaborative teaching and learning. Moreover, we offer teachers who take part in our workshops both server space and ongoing support as they continue to hone their skills and (we hope) to produce materials that will be widely use Read More
