Votes:0 Welcome to Murphy's Fish in a Barrel. This is the story of how recycled wine half-barrels became a backyard pond and fountain. This is a story of how some old, half barrels became a pond and home for Fish in a Barrel. Our pond started out as a single, half wine barrel with a few plants in it, but standing water attracted mosquitoes. So we added some fish, then another barrel ... more fish ... we were hooked! As we learned more about our half-barrel pond's ecosystem, we strived to imitate nature as closely as possible in an artificial environment. The result: the pond has become our sanctuary. So, browse the following pages and play with the fish. Look for the hidden corners and secret paths that will lead you on a journey to ...? We invite you to explore our backyard. I started outdoor water gardening in 1995, with one whiskey barrel to
see just how hard it was to maintain. The whiskey barrel had one
water lily, one tall marginal called Sweet Galingale, and a bunch of
guppies to eat the mosquito larva. It proved to be both easy to maintain
and a pretty addition to the back porch. In 1996, the decision was made to
terrace the slope in the back yard and a pre-formed 150 gallon pond was
bought to incorporate into the terrace design. This pond sat in the back
of the shed while the design was thought out. Finally, in the spring of 1998 the terrace design was mostly completed but the 150 gallon

Before After Since we built most of it ourselves and we had no experience in pond building, we spent nearly every weekend during the summer of 1994 constructing it. However, it has made a striking difference in our backyard and was well worth the time and effort. It all started one afternoon when we laid the garden hose in the middle of the backyard to outline the shape that we wanted the pond to have. A friend then sketched it out on paper and we used that diagram as a guide...digging the hole using a rented tractor. During the construction we made several changes to the original design. Votes:0 Building a Sphagnum Bog Garden by Roberta and Fred Case Sphagnum moss makes an ideal substrate in which to grow some of the showy and more difficult bog and swamp plants, especially carnivorous plants and certain native orchids. And sphagnum moss is attractive in itself. Sphagnum moss requires a constant source of suitable water. Chlorinated or very limey water kills it. However, placing it in a bog next to a pond can solve the water problem. Growing it on neutral or acid sand is a suitable substrate. LOCATION: Full sun, if possible. The sphagnum doesn't need it but many of the showier bog plants do. Area should not collect run off from lawn or other areas. You want only the pond water to enter the bog. Then I learned that chlorine could damage the leaves, so I rushed out to pick some water treatment and put in into the tank. After leaving the nursery with two water lilies and having no place to put them, we stopped by a building supply store and purchased a pre-formed vinyl water garden form. Until the tub was ready, we had to put the lilies somewhere, so we used my Grandmother's leaky old wash tub lined with plastic sheeting to prevent leaks. (Knew I had kept it around for some reason!) Votes:0 Controlling Algae in Your Water Garden Contact: Diane Relf, Extension Specialist, Environmental Horticulture August 1996 There are various forms of algae that grow in a water garden, and when kept under control, some algae is desirable because it acts as a water purifier and a home to necessary microorganisms. A well-balanced water garden has a thin layer of algae on everything that is under water. You can control algae several ways -- chemically; through filtration; using bacterial inoculation; or by establishing a balance in the pond between plant, scavengers, and fish. Many gardeners use a combination, such as creating a natural balance aided by filters and bacteria. A natural balance is created by installing water garden plants, scavengers, and ornamental fish in proper quantities. Pla Read More Go to Site

Votes:0 A Place to Relax, Smell the Flowers, and Listen to The Waterfall Pictured here is our pond, which was constructed May, 1996. It is a place for "grownups" to sit, listen to the soothing falls, and unwind. Perhaps I
should start out by explaining how this idea came about. I had been admiring a friends'
pond for quite sometime and was putting it off because of our young children.
This spring, amidst the swingset and toys, we decided that "we"
needed a place of our own-since the whole yard had become a playground.
The seed was planted, and we couldn't stop thinking about beginning to build our backyard oasis. Contents: Pond Construction Favorite Links The Herb Garden Awards Meet Hollybon! Meet Hannibal! Koi havea high resistance normally and succumb to disease usually only after exposure tostressful conditions that break down the normal immune system. A stressed fishbecomes a sick fish. It has been said that: Fish Disease = Stress Condition + Disease Agent Stress is the main factor man has the most control over. Many disease causingorganisms normally occur in the same environment as the fish. They usually onlybecome a problem when present in significant quantities and/or stress occurs. Therefore, by controlling stress you can help maintain a healthy pond. Votes:0 Illegal and Invasive Plants Texas Law Control of Prohibited Plants Prohibited Plant Species Links to Other Sites The spread of exotic plants in some state waters have chocked water ways and
rendered portions of lakes unusable for humans and native aquatic life.
Many of these plants are invasive, that is, they spread aggressively, outcompeting the native species.
Some species form floating mats that impede boating, fishing, swimming and
clog water intakes for irrigation and electrical generation.
Thick mats also reduce oxygen content and degrade water quality for
fish and other aquatic organisms. Why do we as pond keepers need to be aware of these plants?
Many infestations in the wild are the result of plants that have escaped

What were they I knew nothing about a pond so I had no idea what was needed. Green and nasty water soon followed and as far as I know it stayed that way. 8 years after that start I had seen and heard a little more about ponds and I was building a nice garden but it lacked that sound. Finally I could take it no longer I had to have my pond. This is how an addiction got started and I can't stop " I need more rocks"?? A pond needs a home and this slope needed a little help. But with a little imagination and a lot of effort it was possible to capture that feeling. The sound of running water soothes the soul and now I have that essence in my very own yard. My apartment building has approx. 6'x 14' of yard area. In that space, I have not only installed a submerged pond but proudly display a four tiered fountain and two tiered fountain and two birdbaths. The hardest part about starting the project was getting the permission of the landlord to uproot a small tree and dig up four feet of dirt to install the pond. A pre formed (65 gallon) pond was purchased. The pond was laid upon the dirt, where it was to be installed, and the staked around the perimeter Read More Go to Site
