Asia Times: China: Economic rebound, lack of reform

Votes:0
April 19, 2000 atimes.com Editorials China: Economic rebound, lack of reform China's State Statistical Bureau has just released the full array of official economic statistics for the first quarter and the numbers look better than many had expected. GDP grew a robust 8.1 percent year-on-year, well up from the 6.8 percent growth in the final quarter of last year and the 7.1 percent rise for all of 1999. This first-quarter jump puts China well on track to surpass the ''around 7 percent'' growth officials have forecast for the year 2000. A key ingredient in the country's economic rebound is strong export performance: exports grew by a whopping 39.1 percent in the first quarter, leaving China with a US$5.2 billion trade surplus for the period, a 21 percent increase over the first quarter of 199 Read More
