Flags of the American Revolution

Votes:0
Flags of the American Revolution The early days of the American Revolution led to the use of many flags as the colonists struggled with the aims of the revolt, whether rights within the British Empire or outright independence. Early designs tended to be modifications of British flags until the colonials took the path of independence in 1776. From that point on, the flags of the United States took their own distinct path. An ensign used by British naval and merchant ships, the Red Ensign is the British flag initially favored by the colonists, and all designs of American flags descended from this banner. First used by George Washington on January 1, 1776, this modification of the British Red Ensign became in effect the first national flag of the United States. Black Loyalists One of the most fascinating tales concerning the American Revolution, and Loyalists in particular, is the role of African Americans. Blacks were represented in all geographic areas of America and were a part of everyday life, whether as free people or slaves. Our site covers both the military and civilian aspects of the Black Loyalist experience. There was but one Provincial regiment in which their service was permitted, that of course being the Black Pioneers . Sir William HOWE banned Black and Mulatto soldiers in any Provincial regiment under his command, ordering the discharge of any who had previously enlisted. Sadly, we will never know how many men this affected, as their names have been lost to history. Undeterred, many Blacks found their way to freedom within the Bri Read More
